Ever since I can remember, Penny, also known as Parminder, was always out with a bucket full of water and a cloth to wash her scooter as soon as dawn broke. It was a daily ritual for her, regardless of the weather or the season. I used to watch her from my bedroom window as she cleaned her scooter. Over the years, her scooter changed its design, brand, and color, but her daily ritual stayed the same. Parminder Aunty is an iconic figure in our neighborhood, a single woman, a teacher by profession, and a formidable presence. By 6:45A.M, she would be all set to leave on her scooter for work. The day my parents told me they had enrolled me in her school, I was going to go with her on her scooter the next morning. I was filled with a mixture of awe and fear towards her. When my mother saw me ready early the next day, she was surprised. I told her I was afraid of being late, and she just smiled and kissed my forehead.
I soon realized that I was privileged to go with her regularly. She was highly regarded by her peers and colleagues. I started to enjoy the special attention bestowed on me by my fellow students. Over time, fear and panic changed into respect and admiration. I learned discipline, humanity, and hard work from her. Her presence was felt everywhere whether she was organizing functions, athletic meets, examination setups, health camps, competitions, or lending a helping hand to her colleagues.
In the neighborhood, people also came to her for suggestions and invitees, seeking help to organize functions and events. Parminder was always ready to help with her beautiful smile and calm tone. She was 5 feet 6 inches tall, with a round face, big, beautiful eyes. Her long hair was always woven into a braid that fell to her waist. She was a strict disciplinarian when it came to health. Her starched cotton suits were her signature style, which suited her to perfection.
One day, as we were returning from school, a child suddenly appeared in the middle of the road. Penny applied the brakes to avoid hitting him, causing the scooter to skid, and resulting in an accident. I escaped with minor scratches and bruises, but Penny suffered a head injury and broken ribs. Despite her injuries, her primary concern was our safety. My respect for her grew tremendously that day.
She had to undergo brain surgery and was hospitalized for months. My parents agreed to my staying with her at night when she returned from hospital. Our bond grew stronger, and we hold a special bond for each other in our hearts. Time flew by, and I passed out of school and went for a higher education to a different city.
Before going, I went to meet Penny Aunty, and she told me, “Anaya, enjoy every phase of life, but always keep yourself grounded. Focus on your goals, and you will achieve success. Stay in touch and do not forget your promise.”
