The Shell

The Shell

Strolling along the beach one evening I did see,
A bright blue shell that seemed to wink and shine at me.
I reached for it but the breeze got there first,
Buried so well it lay hidden from human sight.

My thoughts gave me no peace, the shell was on my mind –
Turned back again, hoping this time I would find
It lying there, waiting, for me to make it mine.
The sky watched as I searched in vain.

Blue and lustrous it appeared in my dream
As I lay restless in bed it spoke to me
“I am transitory, I belong to none
Do not hold me in your thoughts: let me go”.

I breathed slowly, long and hard
Quiet I lay, willing my body to still,
Body relaxed blue shadows dissolved;
Peace filled me as the sky turned light.
