Unspoken Words

Unspoken Words

There was a time long, long ago
When all we did was chat
Of love and life and hopes and dreams
Of this and often, that.

Did you sleep well?
Just look at the sea!
What’s for lunch?
Did you dream of me?

Now, we sit at the breakfast table
With a cup of tea and hot buttered toast
The newspapers strewn between us
As we open yesterday’s post.

I pass on the comic strip
You look and smile
A sigh at the news
We read for a while.

Friends, as we grew older, we learnt a lesson
It’s not only words that make a conversation.
