Gratitude

Ashna looked up at the bookshelf fitted above her study table and a sense of gratification shone in her eyes, as she browsed through the series of trophies and certificates lined up there. Her maid Gita had just entered the room with a broom in hand, and she was perceptive enough to notice the glint of pride that radiated on Ashna’s face as she watched her. Gita was quick to note the layer of dust piling on the bookshelf and remarked “Didi! Your awards are gathering dust! Should I climb up and wipe them clean?”  Ashna was appreciative of Gita’s thoughtful nature and immediately sought her help to get the work done. In a while her medals and trophies were sparkling bright.

Gita and her four brothers worked in the same colony, and she being the oldest of all siblings bore the major share of responsibility. She had always longed to get out of this rut and atleast aquire the education needed for a decent job.

Ashna, who had just completed her grade 10 exams with flying colours, shared an unspoken camaraderie with Gita ever since the time she had started working at her place.

The National LiteracyWeek celebrations were on in full swing at Ashna’s school. Registrations were open for the students who wanted to contribute to this mission. Ashna enrolled herself and bought the kit provided by them, as she had made a resolve to teach young Gita, who she knew to be an ardent learner.

Every evening, after school hours, Gita would sit obediently with Ashna, and complete the excercises given in her kit. Gita was a sharp girl and grasped the contents well. Ashna was aware of her tenacious will and dedication and together they hit the milestone of completion within a year. Gita was now in a position to read and write in Hindi and perform mathematical calculations with ease. Ashna’s school soon announced the date for an official exam to be conducted by the National Literacy Mission for all the registered learners. With a new found dignity, Gita walked proudly beside her mentor, Ashna and appeared for the crucial exam, which she passed with distinction.

Together, Ashna and Gita walked hand in hand towards the stage to collect their certificates. Gita was also awarded a medal which she wore with the utmost grace. She was so overwhelmed that tears started rolling down uncontrollably when she gave Ashna a tight hug, in front of the entire applauding audience.

Indeed, a hug is always the right size!  It was the best gift conferred on Ashna, that too on Teacher’s Day! Both the girls glowed with pride—Ashna, at having empowered another woman, and Gita at having broken the stereotyped mindset of her society that often dismissed women as objects of mere submission to patriarchy.
