The sunset of old age casts a deep shadow on Sandhya’s mind and life. Her husband passed away six months ago after a prolonged illness, and her son was settled in Australia. Now, loneliness surrounded her evenings, and the silence in her home was unbearable. She had spent her life as a devoted wife and mother, but after her husband’s death, loneliness and depression tore her apart. Her son was busy in his own life, and she had no place in his family. Sandhya had once wanted to be a painter, but her love for painting had taken a back seat to her responsibilities.

One day, her neighbour and best friend Priya came to share a cup of tea with her, offering companionship during these grim times. Priya was thirty years Sandhya’s junior but cared for her like a mother.

“Sandhya, tomorrow is my weekend off, so get ready by nine and meet me in the society compound,” said Priya.

At nine, they started their journey on Priya’s scotty.

Sandhya asked, “Can I drive a scooter like you at my age? I always dreamed of driving a vehicle, but my husband did not allow me to learn it.”

Priya replied, “Of course, Sandy, what does age have to do with driving? You need enthusiasm and zeal to learn new things.”

Priya parked her scotty inside an old age home. Sandy saw the place was called ‘Hope.’ Sandhya stepped inside the place. She was mesmerized by the lively environment. The vibrant energy inside the facility captivated Sandhya, as she saw seniors engaged in various activities, from playing games and enjoying coffee to teaching and creating handmade products. It was truly a lively and inspiring world within Hope.

Priya smiled looking at Sandhya, she said, “Sandy, I have brought you here to show you a new hope and a sense of belonging. Embrace companionship, make new friends, and use your passion for painting and needlework. I have seen easels and brushes in your home, and you are so clever with a needle. Share your joy and creativity; now is the time to start living for yourself. You can spend the day here and  return home in the evening.” After my mother’s demise, my father became lonely. He craved the company of people his age; I brought him here. He started living and smiling again.

Sandy’s eyes filled with tears and her heart swelled with love for this beautiful girl. “Priya, my son left me alone, but you thought about my loneliness. The sound of stillness in my life is creeping and eating me. Thank you for showing me a new light and guiding me on the right path,” said Sandhya.

Priya wiped Sandhya’s tears, embraced her, and said, “A hug is always the right size.”
