Mates by Fate

“Amrita, I am forwarding to you a profile. Please have a look.”
“Mama, not again. I am busy with my assignments and have no time to chat with anyone.”
“Beta, this boy has come to India and presently is at his sister’s place. Meet him once; you will save time on the chatting.”  the anxious mother replied.
Exasperated, Amrita replied,” Not until next week.”
A week later, warily, Neha asked Amrita, “Should I ask the matchmaker to arrange a meeting with the boy this week?” Unenthusiastically, Amrita agreed.
After some time dejectedly, Neha informed Amrita, “He already left India.” “Really?” was Amrita’s elated reply.
             A year later...
“Amrita, a very nice family has liked your profile. They have sent the boy’s profile and contact number. Please, have a look.”
“Why don’t these matchmakers leave me alone?” replied Amrita infuriated. “You know Mama, I am so busy.”
Sternly, Neha replied, “Yes, I know. Even the boy must be busy. But he has agreed to have a conversation with you. I will not tolerate any excuses now.”
After two days, a message flashed on Amrita’s WhatsApp. “Hi, Anish here.”
                   “How are you?”
“Is it a good time to chat just now?”
Remembering her mother’s stern warning, Amrita hastily replied to all the messages. The conversation started, picked up, and surprisingly flowed beautifully.
Neha’s joy was boundless. Relieved at last, her obstinate daughter was heeding her advice.
A few weeks later, Amrita was scrolling through her WhatsApp messages, searching for something, when she came across a number and a photograph forwarded by her mother. The photo was not downloaded. The number looked vaguely familiar.
Amrita downloaded the photo and got a shocking surprise. On a hunch, she checked the number with the one already with her. Both the number and photograph belonged to Anish. She went running to her mother. “Mama, you know Anish is the boy I refused to meet one year ago.”
Surprised, Neha retorted, “You didn’t want to chat with him this time too.”
Amrita blushed and answered, “My mistake, Mama. I like him. We seem to have so much in common. Now, I will not refuse to meet him.
Neha was elated at Amrita’s reply. A meeting was soon finalized between the two families. When Anish and Amrita met, the faint ringing of wedding bells could be heard by all the family members.
They liked each other immensely. It was love at first, or more appropriately, a belated sight. Anish was elated to know Amrita had unknowingly kept his photograph and phone number with her for a year. It was fate that had decided their date!
